Sidemen Village Bali- 20 Exciting Things To Do On Your Trip

Sharing is caring!

Nestled in the lush eastern hills of Bali, Sidemen (pronounced See-deh-men) offers a peaceful escape from the island’s bustling tourist hotspots. This serene valley, framed by emerald rice terraces, the majestic Mount Agung, and winding rivers, feels like the “real” Bali—authentic, unhurried, and deeply connected to nature and local culture. Whether you’re seeking adventure through waterfalls and rafting, cultural immersion via cooking classes and temples, or simply a quiet spot to unwind amid stunning scenery, Sidemen delivers a rejuvenating contrast to places like Ubud or the southern beaches. It’s the perfect place to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect—ideal for the middle or end of your Bali trip.

How to Visit Sidemen Village Bali

sidemen village bali

Sidemen is located in East Bali, approximately 22.5 hours from Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar) or approximately 1.5 hours from Ubud, depending on traffic. The roads in Bali are prone to traffic, with the most common occurrence being during peak hours (morning and late afternoon), and what could be a 1-2 hour journey actually takes 3 hours or more. Hiring a private driver and car is the most suitable choice (approximately 400,000,000 IDR). Scooters are a favorite among locals, but also somewhat dangerous because of the windy, hilly roads and hectic traffic.

How Long to Stay?

Plan for no less than 2-3 complete days in order to have a real time out. Add an additional day to have a more relaxed schedule, more walking, or rest on the river. Most of the visitors spend 4-5 days being completely absorbed in the peace.

Getting Around

Rent a scooter (when you know what you are doing and are confident) to drive freely in the valley to explore the back roads of the valley- it is the most flexible method. In the case of groups, families, or people who are not very comfortable on bikes, rent a dedicated driver daily (300,000500,000 IDR). Copy down offline maps (such as Maps.me) for remote areas where the signal goes dead.

Best Time to Visit Sidemen Village Bali

sidemen village bali

The dry season (April to October) is the best time to view the panoramic Mount Agung, to trek, and to spend a lot of time outside, with May to September being the best part of the year (usually). The wet months (November to March) bring a healthy green richness to the rice fields and sceneries, and gloomy weather and less traffic. Rains are typically brief afternoon showers; thus, bring a light rain jacket.

Where to Stay in Sidemen Village Bali?

sidemen village bali

Sidemen is a village, and accommodation here is affordable, with luxurious hotels offering breathtaking scenic views and peace at a real bargain. I have spent a wonderful time in Bukit Luah Sidemen, and I can definitely recommend it to anyone because it is located right outside the town center, with amazing views of rice fields, friendly and helpful staff, and affordable to the middle-range visitors (comfy rooms, no noise, and so on).

To treat oneself, Wapa di Ume Sidemen is all luxury, aiming at individual plunge pools, hot tubs, spacious, stylish rooms, superior services, and hillside views of Mount Agung and rice terraces- it is often listed as one of the best boutique resorts in Bali.

Another newcomer worth mentioning is Nivriti, which I am obsessed with because of the calm design and the setting to immerse. Budget-wise, Dika Homestay provides basic rooms, which are clean and comfortable, yet the main road is located just off the main road, which is a good place to stay with no frills and still be near everything.

Top Things to Do in Sidemen Village Bali

Now that we covered some basics, let’s quickly go through some of the best things to do in Sidemen Village Bali, starting with…

Telaga Waja River Go Rafting

sidemen village bali

One of the best experiences to experience the natural beauty of Sidemen without being surrounded by the usual groups of tourists is river rafting on the Telaga Waja River. The river is directly passing through the valley and provides an exhilarating but not too difficult 18 km run with Class II-III rapids to manage, ideal for beginners and families, not too hectic. You will sail across green forests, colorful rice fields, as well as under waterfalls, and you can have a chance to swim in cool pools under the falls and to examine the nature around them.

Numerous tourists praise the quiet and non-crowded atmosphere and the excitement of the experience. Price: Approximately 500,000 IDR (~$30-35 USD) per head (current offers vary in price between 450,000550,000 IDR based on the number of people and add-ons, such as lunch and transportation). Suggestion: Half-day tours with companies such as BTR or other reputable companies- book in advance to get the most out of it.

Go to Tukad Cepung Waterfall

tukad cepung

The Tukad Cepung Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bali, which is only 40 minutes northwest of Sidemen. The whole complex is magical, and sunlight rays are penetrating through a cave-like grotto to light up the flowing water. The approach used is a short (5-10 minutes) and steep staircase down to a jungle environment, after which one follows a small stream for another few minutes to the bottom.

Arriving early (around 8:30 am) is a major factor to enjoy it comparatively empty before tour groups come in during the day; it can become rather busy.

Entry fee: 30,000 IDR per head.

Visit Pura Lempuyang

Pura Lempuyang

One of the most sacred temples in Bali and an Instagram viral one is Pura Lempuyang, the Gates of Heaven, located on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang, approximately 1 hour drive from Sidemen at 1,175 meters above sea level. The famous split gates are used to frame Mount Agung in a dramatic way during clear days, which creates that vision of heaven. The complex has a sequence of 7 temples ascending the mountain, where the best-known sight is on the first level, the renowned viewpoint; however, the entire journey of 1,700 steps will reward you with the vast scenery and a more profound spiritual experience, provided that you have the strength.

Dress simply (sarong may be needed, usually supplied), get there early in the morning to see clearer skies, fewer clouds covering Agung, and shorter queues (crowds are still heavy in 2026; as long as you arrive early in the morning, or late in the afternoon, you will be able to get your photos). Entry: It will cost approximately 10,000-70,000 IDR (plus shuttle charges in certain accounts).

Enjoy the Sidemen Rice Terraces

Sidemen Rice Terraces

Sidemen rice terraces have endless lush green meadows that can go as far as the eye can see- natural, tranquil, and blissfully unfrequented, unlike some other more famous terraces like the Ubud Tegalalang. Even a brief excursion beyond the central village allows one to discover countless photogenic locations.

Begin with the trip to the center and proceed to Warung Makan Iseh in order to have panoramic views. In case of photos of workers or close-ups, permission should always be sought first, and a small donation (the cost is usually by donation) should be made.

Join a Sidemen Cooking Class

A culinary tour in Sidemen village Bali is a tasty immersion into the world of Balinese cuisine, despite your lack of culinary ambitions – it is particularly fruitful with food enthusiasts. Orders are usually begun by mortar grinding a fragrant spice powder (turmeric, ginger, lemongrass, chilies, bay leaves, etc.) as a foundation to such foods as satay, lawar, or nasi campur.

Things take approximately 2-3 hours, with a final feast that you created. Price: Approximately 500,000 IDR (~$30+ USD) per head. There are regular classes or vegan farm-to-table alternatives in organic gardens with a view of Mount Agung, and harvesting of fresh ingredients is an authentic touch.

Lahangan Sweet

Lahangan Sweet

Lahangan Sweet is a lesser-known vantage point in East Bali, located on a hilly ridge in forested land, 1.5 hours away from Sidemen. It provides panoramic views of 180 degrees of Mount Agung, thick jungle, and coastline on tree-built platforms, which is perfect to view the sunrise or sunset in a serene and dramatic setting. It is only accessible by road and then a short walk, but the serene, non-commercial atmosphere (small entry fee, primitive facilities) is what the lonesome traveler needs to find the authentically beautiful nature Sidemen is so famous for.

Stay in Bamboo House in Sidemen

Sidemen bamboo house

Sidemen Valley also has some of the most amazing bamboo houses and treehouses in Bali, remote, romantic, and very Instagrammable, in particular, among couples. Places such as Villa Veluvana are luxurious with a jungle setting, epic views, and, in most cases, personal pools. It is difficult to leave once you have checked in because of the peaceful seclusion, which most visitors say is the best part of their vacation.

Go Trekking in Sidemen Village Bali

Sidemen is one of the best places to explore on foot in Bali; the paths follow rice fields, rivers, forested areas, and villages. Sunny days are rewarded with beautiful views of Mount Agung. Get a local guide to get to off-the-beaten path and explore more of the culture- the story of communities will be more to the landscape. Tip: During the wet season (December-April), it is humid and rains in the afternoon – better to get everything done early, then go and do other things later.

Venture Down to the River

river sidemen

A most peaceful experience in the life of Sidemen is a trip to the winding valley river. There are several villas above the banks, and short walks will bring one to secluded positions to wet feet, or to watch people bathing, or to hear falling water and birds. It’s ideal when one wants to reflect or have a picnic along a river stream- some of the facilities, such as the Wapa di Ume, have guided walks or exclusive access to be at one with nature.

Visit Gembleng Waterfall

Gembleng Waterfall

The Gembleng Waterfall, which is a slightly more recent discovery near the Sidemen Village, has natural rock pools with gorgeous rice field scenes. It is a short yet steep walk to invigorating swims in several pools. No specific entry fee, but the country people like a little donation. It is a quiet, less-travelled secret spot to relax.

Go for a Meal with a View

sidemen food

Dining in Sidemen is gleaming with vistas of rice fields, savored in the panorama- Bintang, with local food. Go to Warung Makan (a 15-minute drive) and admire the untouched valley and enjoy delicious meals – a good stop after a long day of exploration. Better alternatives are Warung D Padi (at rice fields), Warung Tirta Unda (views of the paddies), and La Montagne.

Spoil yourself with a Floral Bath and Floating Breakfast With a View

a table that is in the middle of a pool

Wellness is also inherent in such luxury destinations as Wapa di Ume Sidemen, where a traditional Balinese massage and flower bath in warm water with floating petals are offered overlooking the jungle and rice fields. In the morning, you can have a floating breakfast in your own pool with tropical fruits, cakes, eggs, juices, and coffee against the misty Sleeping Gajah mountainside scenery, refreshing and dreamy, either romantic or self-indulgent.

Visit Bukit Cinta

bukit cinta

When you have been scrolling through Instagram feeds of Bali’s hidden gems, the Bukit Cinta (also known as Love Hill) has most probably featured in the lists as one of the most beautiful sunrise points. This high position serves up a clear-cut jaw-dropping view of Mount Agung in a dramatic upsurge against the horizon, which is usually softly lit by pink and golden sunlight; it’s much less commercialized than certain other well-known viewpoints.

To access it, it takes some 45 minutes to drive northwards of Sidemen (or 30-60 minutes depending on the point of your starting location within the area) along picturesque meandering roads passing through delightful local villages, rice paddy, and undulating hills.

The most ideal would definitely be the sunrise (you have to be there before 6:00 am in the dry season so that the clouds will not block the view, and the weather is cooler and clearer), although usually in the later morning, clouds come in. Complete it with a visit to a local temple to spend the entire morning in East Bali magic. Best suggestion: In case you need more off-the-beaten-path energy like Sidemen with a touch of Insta desired, on a day field trip, you may go to Munduk, which is surrounded by rice fields, waterfalls, and foggy mountains.

Fishing At Temples Around Sidemen

sidemen temple

The location of Sidemen also makes it an excellent centre for visiting some of the most important and photogenic temples in Bali.

Besakih Temple (the “Mother Temple): It is the largest agricultural complex on the slopes of the mountain Agung and is the most significant site of all Hindu temples on the island because of numerous shrines and spectacular volcanic settings.

Pura Lempuyang (the Gates of Heaven): This is perhaps the most popular temple in Bali as it has split gates with Mount Agung in the background (approximately 1-hour drive). It costs about 100,000 IDR each way to get in (with an additional charge of about 50,000 IDR round-trip on a shuttle bus in case you do not walk up the mountain to get there).

Do Yoga or Get a Massage

yoga bali

The most appealing fact about Sidemen is its remote location, which guarantees one of the most peaceful visits in which one can relax without any distractions. Stay in a peaceful hotel in the middle of the rice fields, such as Gladak di Ume, so that one can have the full relaxation experience in a peaceful and nature-immersive environment.

Spend the free time in the balcony reading a book, wake up late with the view of the valley, practice your yoga in the open fields, have a traditional Balinese massage (with aromatic oils and pressure points), and take a personal bath out in the outdoors without seeing any other people around you. It is the ideal low-key means of reviving oneself and associating with a slower pace of rural Bali.

Drive the Sidemen Loop

Sidemen Loop

This scenic loop was something that I had seen on Google Maps last year during my birthday stay in Sidemen, and I got to ride on motorbikes to see what the mountains had to offer around the area. It was just magic. Riding (or driving pillion) down this scenic road is amazingly liberating, and it has the Asian flair of wide open roads as you ride through rice fields, villages, and green hills.

Go on a Guided Bike Tour

Sidemen Loop

Sidemen tour with the lovely staff of Samanvaya was quality and unquestionably one of my favorite days. We toured some of the richest tropical environments and rode through monkey-infested areas, temples, stunning ocean sceneries, and even a waterfall (hopefully it is not dry during your ride!). These guided bicycle tours are an engaging, interactive method of exploration of the finest secrets in the region with the added bonus of benefiting local operators, which is highly recommended to anyone looking to have an adventure with a taste of culture.
