Sri Lanka is home to 21.6  million people. Around 75% of the total population consists of ethnic Sinhalese. The main minority ethnic groups are Sri Lankan Tamils, Sri Lankan Moors, Indian Tamils and others.

Official Language

The official language is Sinhala and Tamil.

Sri Lanka”s official currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (currency code LRK). One Euro/USD is equal to roughly 210-193 LRK.

Geography

With a territory of 65,610 square kilometers, Sri Lanka is the 25th largest island in the world by area. Sri Lanka is located the Indian Ocean southwest of the Bay of Bengal, and separated from the mainland portion of the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait.  Fun Fact :- Sri Lanka is also known as “tear drop of India”.

Climate

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with two different seasons. The wet season (April- November) and the dry season (December-March).

Economy & Budget

Sri Lanka is a upper middle-income country with a free-market economy. Backpackers can survive with around $20 per day, while mid-range travelers spend between $50 and $70 per day on average.

Capital

Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is the official capital with total population of 115,826 but Colombo is the economic center with total population of 752,993.
