Ubud – Best for temples, culture & nature
We start this guide to where to stay in Bali for a week with Ubud, an inland town in the middle of Bali, which is approximately 1.5 hours north of the airport, and it seems like a different world compared to the beach crowds. It is the spiritual and cultural heart of Bali, with jungle, rice terraces, and river valleys.
Ubud town is a vibrant place, and temples, markets, cafes, and yoga studios are densely located in a walkable center. A 10-15 minute drive out of the center, and you have the quiet villages, scenic hikes, towering waterfalls, and some of the most beautiful villas on the island. In town, traffic may be very heavy, and being a little out of the center may be a better experience.
Getting around:
In central Ubud, walking is the main option, whereas scooters or Grab/Gojek are the best for visiting the surrounding villages. Hotels also have a lot of shuttle services to town.

Yes, this is the place where people come and party hard. However, Kuta is also not that unreasonable: it is inexpensive, can be walked around, there are numerous restaurants and other places to shop, and it is on the beach. It is due to this that it makes a very convenient place to spend the night or two at the beginning or end of your trip, particularly in cases where you are coming in late or leaving early.
Getting around:
Walking is your best choice in the crowded Central Kuta. One can find cabs, Grab, and Gojek, and transfer to and from the airport is quick, convenient, and affordable.

It is fairly dispersed and not a good walking area compared to other areas in Bali, but in case you are okay with renting a scooter or hiring some drivers, the Bukit is more than worthwhile.

It is a fine alternative to Kuta in case you do not like being near the airport and getting hassled with it. The shore is agreeable, the atmosphere is easy-going, and there is no need to travel long distances to find a surf wave.
Getting around:
Small taxi trips to the airport, Uluwatu, and Nusa Dua. Scooters are not a necessity but a convenience.
