10 Reasons To Visit A Farm At Least Once In A Lifetime

Farms are a crucial part of our world, not only because of the food they provide us but also because they help to promote and protect regional food systems and contribute to the overall environmental quality. However, most people today wouldn’t like to live and work on a farm and the number of farmers decreases day-by-day. One of the best and most enjoyable ways to help save the farmlands is to visit the farm. By doing this, not only are you helping provide a steady source of income for the hard-working farmer, but you’re also contributing to the local economy as well.

Aside from this, there are some other very good reasons and benefits of visiting the farm. Farms are great destinations to visit and get away from the urban jungle, get some much-needed fresh air, and even learn a few new things while connecting with the local food system. Here are some great reasons why you should visit the farm at least once in a lifetime.

1. Learn How Your Food Is Raised

You’ll be surprised when you learn that the food that we eat isn’t actually raised the way you originally thought. However, when you visit the farm, you get firsthand experience of how your food is raised. In a world where you can’t know for sure how “caged” or ” sprayed” your food is, visiting a farm will provide you with that knowledge.

This is a unique experience for people from all age groups that will change the way you connect with your food and give you a deeper appreciation for all the hard work that happens in the background before those groceries reach our home. I’m pretty sure that seeing this will make you waste fewer resources and be a more conscious consumer. A lot more people acknowledge this and as we enter the second decade of the 21st century, this is becoming one of the most important pillars of food tourism.

2. Find The Healthiest Produce

If you live in a big city, chances are that it is not very easy for you to find a store with fully organic produce. They are sprayed with all kinds of stuff to make them grow faster and last longer on the shelf – and those chemicals are not the healthiest thing. Well, if you visit the farm, you can get the produce straight from the horse’s mouth (well, not literally), and you will know that they are as healthy as they can be.

3. Find The Most Delicious Produce

Nothing really beats the taste of local produce that was just plucked there on the spot, right in front of your eyes. Not only is the produce found on farms very healthy, but it is also delicious. When you add chemicals and pesticides to fruits or veggies, it strips away all the flavor and makes it seem very unattractive when it comes to taste.

However, if you get these products from a farm, chances are that they will not be using the mass chemical pesticides – and they will be growing their products organically.

4. Reasons To Visit The Farm- Pick Products Yourself

Most farms allow you to pick the produce that you want yourself straight from the crop. Some may see it as a hassle, but most of us actually find it rather enjoyable. It is a great way to get in touch with nature, and it’s something that you might not do on a daily basis.

5. A Perfect Playground For Kids

A farm stay is a great way for children to learn where food is coming from. No wonder a lot of countries like France, Germany, and Slovenia do everything they can to stimulate people to visit the farm. However, this is definitely not the only reason to take your little ones to the farm.

At the farm, you’ll find a lot of chicken, sheep, cows, horses – and pretty much all types of domestic animals. For a child, that is the equivalent of a zoo. Plus, it is not as expensive to enter a farm s it is to enter a zoo – so you will be entertaining your kid while also protecting your budget.

6. Reconnect With Nature

Nowadays, all we have are big buildings, highways, countless cars, and pollution galore. We spend way too much time in front of screens. However, when you visit a farm, you will be away from all of that – and will actually be able to breathe in some fresh air.

You will be able to get away from the “concrete jungle” and purify your body and your mind, at least for a few hours. This will likely improve your mental well-being, and decrease the feelings of stress and anxiety. Bear in mind that most farms are far from airports and cities in general – which is why you may want to opt for an airport transfer before visiting.

7. Bring The Farm To Life

There’s an old saying that says experience is the best teacher. Now, most people won’t get the opportunity to work on a farm in their lifetime but visiting one would be the next best thing. Seeing first-hand how farmers do all the hard work of raising crops and caring for the animals the good old-fashioned way is just beautiful. It’s an amazing experience.

It’s here that you learn that the package of meat or the groceries you buy in the store are so much more than a mere product. Nowadays, many people don’t like working on the farm and find it humiliating, even though there’s nothing humiliating about it. We have created this image and we can change it by visiting more often and…

8. Support Local Agriculture

When you decide to visit the farm, you’re not just visiting the farm. You’re contributing towards building a more sustainable food system. And one sustainable food system always starts with restoring our connection between food producers and food consumers.

Have that in mind next time you decide to visit the local farm. Remember that by doing so, you contribute not only to supporting those businesses but also to preserving the health of our agricultural community, environment, and local food system.

9. Learn Something New

We can all learn something from the farm. You can indulge in some not only fun but also educational activities for both, adults and children! Whether it’s teaching children firsthand about the different kinds of plants and animals and where their food comes from or participating in guided tours or cooking classes, many farms offer an abundance of activities that can help stimulate one’s appetite for learning.

10. Connect With Farmers And Their Families

We all read success stories about farmers in magazines and even TV shows but the people in these stories are real people with real families. And quite often, people with a real love for what they’re doing. People who appreciate the people who purchase from their farm and support their family. People with a real commitment to making their visitors feel at home and always there to answer all of their questions.

These people could have migrated to the city if they wanted to. However, they decided to stay at the farm and grow food for all of us. We should be grateful for it and we should show support for these families around the globe. Visiting the farm is one of the best ways to do this.

Can't agree with you more. I come across a lot of people who are quite fed up with city life and also some who have already left it for a quiet life. Fresh air and being close to nature would be my main reasons. We need more such articles to encourage people.

I so agree with this post! I grew up with a family farm we went to on the weekends and picked apples from our orchard. We didn't grow much, but it was such a great place to be a kid. As an adult, I still love going apple picking or to farmers markets to reconnect with that piece of my childhood (and get some amazing food!).

An article to which I agree with every word of it. Since I am a vegetarian, I am always up for fresh produce. Reconnecting with nature is what I like the most about being in a farm. Beautiful post with beautiful pictures.
