Birdwatching Bliss at Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary
We’re starting this list of hidden gems in Goa with Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. Tucked away amidst the verdant greenery of Chorao Island along the Mandovi River, the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is a veritable treasure trove for avian enthusiasts and those partial to the whispers of nature. This sanctuary, named after the renowned ornithologist, is quite the covert Eden – it’s not every day you find a place that’s both a twitcher’s dream and a haven for peace-seekers.
The sanctuary is a bit of a secret, whispered among those who prefer binoculars to beach balls. Here, you can engage in the tranquil art of birdwatching, where the only tweets come from the treetops, not your smartphone. The mangrove ecosystem hosts a banquet of birds – from the flamboyant Kingfisher to the dignified Egret – and if you’re lucky, you might spot the furtive jackal or the mud-skipper, which is quite the acrobat despite its muddy abode.
Exploring the Mystical Lamgau Caves
If you thought Goa was all about sun, surf, and spirits, let me take you on a detour to the Lamgau Caves – an archaeological wonder that often slips under the tourist radar, much like that last French fry that escapes the hungry grasp of a group meal.
Nestled in the Bicholim town of North Goa, these caves are a marvel of ancient craftsmanship. It’s a place where history buffs and adventure seekers high-five each other. The caves are a labyrinth of laterite sculptures, offering a cool respite from Goa’s otherwise balmy embrace. What to do? Bring out your inner Indiana Jones and explore! You won’t find treasure chests or mystical stones (sorry to burst your ‘Temple of Doom’ bubble), but you will find a serenity that’s rare in the usual Goan haunts.
Serenity and Sandcastles at Galgibaga Beach
Next on our list of hidden gems in Goa we have Galgibaga Beach, Goa’s answer to the secret garden, only it’s not a garden and there are no locks. A hidden gem? More like a pirate’s buried treasure without the need for a map. It’s the quieter cousin of the more rambunctious Goan beaches, where the only crowds you’ll encounter are the olive ridley turtles – and they’re the kind of locals who won’t steal your beach chair.
What’s on the to-do list? Well, for starters, you can perfect the art of doing nothing. The beach is a canvas for relaxation, with golden sands that demand to be turned into sandcastles or just to be lounged upon.
Adventurous Trekking at Chorla Ghats
Chorla Ghats – it’s not your average Goan postcard scene. Forget the trance parties and the beach volleyball; this is where Goa wears its adventure cap, or should I say, its trekking boots. It’s a stretch where the Western Ghats play peekaboo with the coastline, offering lush landscapes that can make even the most overworked office plant green with envy.
Why is it one of the finest hidden gems in Goa? Because it’s the road less traveled, and it doesn’t end at a beach shack. It’s where you swap your flip-flops for hiking shoes and your mojitos for water bottles. This is Goa’s wild side, where the only beats you hear are the symphony of crickets and your own heartbeat as you navigate the trails.
Kayaking Excursions at Carambolim Lake
Carambolim Lake is Goa’s serene little secret, a tranquil hideaway where the water is as calm as a monk in meditation. It’s where kayaks glide gracefully, almost like a ballet on water, except there’s no tutus and the orchestra is a chorus of birds. This is for those who like their water sports served with a side of peace and quiet. It’s a little pocket of paradise where the only waves you’ll make are with your paddle.
What’s there to do? Well, if you like the idea of kayaking through a tapestry of lush greenery, with the chance of a bird or two using your head as a pit stop, then this is your kind of adventure.
Wildlife Spotting in Bhagwan Mahavir
If you’re the kind who thinks Goa is just a sun-tanned stretch of sand, let’s go on a wild ride to Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. Hidden away in the Western Ghats, this is Goa’s largest wildlife preserve, and it’s like someone let the jungle in on a secret and forgot to tell the rest of us.
In the sanctuary, the air is fresher, and the wildlife is like a VIP guest list – exclusive. It’s home to leopards with stealth mode better than your browser’s, and birds that flaunt their colors like they’re on the runway. Not to mention the Malayan giant squirrels, which could give your cat a run for its cuteness money.
Mollem National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary
Mollem National Park, the unsung hero of Goa’s ecotourism, isn’t just off the beaten path—it practically invented its own path. What’s on the agenda? Picture this: you, donning your best Indiana Jones look, are hiking through thickets where the only Wi-Fi connection is the ‘Hi-Fi’ you get from a passing bird. The park is a playground for spotting bisons who’ve mastered the art of the stoic pose, and monkeys that are the original influencers of the tree canopies.
As for getting there, if you can navigate to the nearest beach shack in Goa, you can find Mollem. It’s a straight shot east from Panaji or Margao. Hop in a cab or a local bus that knows the jungle beats as well as the city streets.
Discovering the Hidden History of Rivona Caves
What’s the game plan at Rivona Caves? Well, for starters, channel your inner archaeologist and get ready to decode carvings that have seen more sunsets than any influencer ever will. These caves are a relic of Buddhist monastic traditions – think less ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ and more ‘Meditate, Study, Enlighten.’ There’s plenty to explore and ponder upon, with caverns that echo with the whispers of monks from long ago.
Finding Rivona is like following a trail of breadcrumbs if the breadcrumbs were signposts through the verdant Goan countryside. You’ll meander through Ponda, which is the nearest major town, and then dive into the quieter village roads of Rivona. A local guide isn’t a must, but it’s like having a walking, talking encyclopedia – the kind that doesn’t require a Wi-Fi connection.
Sunrise Yoga on Velsao Beach
This list of hidden gems in Goa couldn’t be complete without, Velsao Beach. This place is like that quiet kid in class who turns out to be a rockstar at the reunion – unassuming but downright awesome. For those who’ve had their fill of Goa’s party scene, this beach offers a slice of Zen with sunrise yoga sessions that can make even the stiffest of bodies feel like they’re made of rubber.
What else is there to do? Once you’ve namaste’d to your heart’s content, take a barefoot stroll along the shore, build sandcastles like a pro (no judgment here), or simply become one with the sunbed. Velsao is also a great spot for a swim, but remember, the sea is not a swimming pool – no lifeguards on duty, so keep an eye on those waves.
Exploring the Legacy of Fort Tiracol
Fort Tiracol, perched at the tip-top of Goa like a crown jewel that’s modestly aware of its own charm, is the sort of place that history enthusiasts and lovers of lore dream about. First up, time travel through architecture – the fort is a patchwork quilt of Portuguese and Indian history, with walls that have seen more battles than your average Game of Thrones episode. The views here are spectacular, with a 360-degree panorama of the Arabian Sea that can make even the most seasoned Instagrammer’s heart skip a beat.
Getting there is a bit of an adventure – it’s at the northernmost tip of Goa, after all. You’ll find yourself on a ferry ride that’s so picturesque, you’ll be torn between the urge to capture it on camera and the desire to just soak it in. Once you land, a winding road leads you to the fort, which is now partly a heritage hotel.
Tranquil Moments at Betul Beach
At Betul, the to-do list is all about unwinding. You can soak up the sun without worrying about the real estate on the sand – because here, there’s plenty. The sea is inviting, perfect for a dip, but it’s more of a gentle wade-in rather than a dive-in situation – let’s leave the dramatic entries to the Bollywood stars.
Getting there is a journey of discovery in itself. Nestled in the south, it’s a scenic detour from the more frequented beaches. You’ll wind through the lush Goan countryside, and if you’re relying on public transport, be ready for a little walk – think of it as the universe’s way of saying you’ve earned the tranquility.
Photography Tour at Cumbarjua Backwater Canal
Next on our list of hidden gems in Goa we have the Cumbarjua Backwater Canal (did you know that similar to its neighbour state Kerala, Goa also has a few backwater canals?). Cumbarjua Backwater Canal is Goa’s version of a secret garden – if the garden was a waterway and instead of flowers, you had crocodiles lazing on the banks, considering their next swim. This is Goa off the beaten track, the antithesis of the tourist treadmill.
So, what’s the draw? The canal is a mangrove-lined waterway where you can take a boat trip into the heart of Goan wilderness. It’s like the jungle cruise of Disneyland, but with real animals and without the singing animatronics. The main stars here are the crocs, who, despite their toothy grins, aren’t keen on selfies.
Picnicking by the Bamanbudo Waterfalls
Speaking of hidden gems in Goa, we can’t forget about Bamanbudo Waterfalls. Bamanbudo isn’t your over-the-top, thunderous waterfall. It’s more of a graceful cascade, perfect for those who like their natural showers without the fear of being pummeled. It’s an ideal spot for a picnic – think sandwiches, laughter, and the occasional butterfly gatecrashing your meal.
Getting to Bamanbudo is a bit like following a treasure map. Located along the Canacona-Naturlim road, it’s a drive through some of Goa’s most scenic landscapes. The waterfall is conveniently roadside, which means no adventurous trekking is needed to get there. It’s almost like nature said, “Let’s keep this easy.”
Soaking in Nature at Pomburpa Springs
Pomburpa Springs is like that unassuming little café you stumble upon in a back alley, only it’s a natural spring and the coffee is replaced with rejuvenating mineral water. This spot is Goa’s version of a natural spa retreat, minus the hefty price tag and the fluffy robes.
So, what’s the deal at Pomburpa Springs? It’s all about taking a dip in the medicinal waters, rumored to have healing powers. It’s like Mother Nature brewed up her own special concoction for relaxation and threw in a dash of scenic beauty for good measure.
Scenic Hiking to Harvalem Falls
Tucked away in the rustic charm of Sanquelim, this waterfall is a scenic spectacle that doesn’t just sit there looking pretty – it invites you for a hike with a promise of a watery grand finale. The hiking trail to Harvalem Falls is a blend of light adventure and nature therapy. It’s where every step takes you further away from the din of the usual Goan haunts and closer to a symphony orchestrated by nature. The path is draped in green, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a fantasy novel, minus the dragons and the wizard duels.
Sunset Watching from Sinquerim Fort
Perched at the edge of the Sinquerim beach, it’s where you can catch a sunset that could make even the most stoic poet want to pen a verse or two. What to do? Well, Sinquerim Fort isn’t your run-of-the-mill tourist spot with flashy signs and souvenir shops. It’s more of a ‘bring your own nostalgia and sense of wonder’ kind of place. The fort itself is a relic of history, standing tall and telling tales of battles and bygone days. But the real showstopper is the sunset – think of it as nature’s daily blockbuster, best viewed from the fort’s ramparts.
Eco-Tourism at Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary
This list of hidden gems in Goa couldn’t be complete without the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary. This is the kind of place where nature hasn’t just been preserved; it’s been given the VIP treatment. This is eco-tourism in its most authentic attire, where the trees stand tall like skyscrapers made of leaves and branches.
What’s on the eco-menu? Well, for starters, the sanctuary offers a buffet of biodiversity. You can play ‘spot the wildlife’ with a chance to see monkeys swinging from their natural jungle gyms, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a leopard or a gaur, doing their best to ignore the paparazzi. Birdwatchers can turn their binoculars skyward to witness a kaleidoscope of feathered performers.
Dolphin Watching at Ashwem Beach
Ashwem Beach is like that cool, low-key friend who knows a celebrity – in this case, the celebrities are dolphins. Tucked away in North Goa, it’s a serene alternative to the usual buzzing beach spots, where the waves aren’t just for surfing, but also for the playful antics of dolphins.
What’s the scoop on dolphin watching? It’s pretty much the aquatic version of a safari. You hop onto a boat and head out to sea, where these aquatic acrobats put on a show that could rival any Olympic gymnastics routine. The best part? No two dolphin displays are the same. It’s like watching live improv, only cuter and with more flips.
Historical Exploration of Arvalem Caves
This list couldn’t be complete without Arvalem Caves, ancient rock-cut caves are shrouded in as much mystery as your neighbor who gets midnight deliveries. Said to date back to the 6th century, they offer a glimpse into Goa’s past that doesn’t involve beach shacks or trance parties.
What’s there to do? Well, for starters, put on your Indiana Jones hat and get ready for some historical spelunking. The caves are small but compelling, with intriguing carvings that make you wonder about their creators. And if you fancy a bit of legend, local lore ties these caves to the epic Mahabharata, giving you some cool trivia to share.

Boating Around Pequeno (Bat) Island
Located just a short boat ride off the coast of Goa, it’s the sort of place where you can swap the sound of traffic for the gentle lapping of waves and the occasional chatty seagull.
What’s on the island agenda? Well, first up, it’s a snorkeler’s paradise. The waters around Bat Island are clear, calm, and teeming with marine life. It’s like being in a live-action Finding Nemo, minus the talking fish. You can also try your hand at fishing – it’s both relaxing and thrilling, a bit like yoga, but with the potential for a seafood dinner. Getting there is part of the adventure. You’ll need to head to Vasco da Gama or Bogmalo Beach, where you can hire a boat.
Refreshing Swims in the Waters of Netravali
Netravali, tucked away in the lush embrace of South Goa, is like a secret swimming hole straight out of a fantasy novel, minus the mythical creatures. This tranquil spot, known for its rejuvenating waters, is a refreshing change from Goa’s bustling beach scene. It’s where you trade the salty sea for fresh, bubbling springs.
The main star here is the natural swimming pool, fed by springs that are as playful as they are refreshing. The water is so clear, you might start questioning the transparency of every other water body you’ve ever encountered. It’s perfect for a leisurely swim or just floating around, contemplating life’s mysteries, like why we never see baby pigeons.
Coastal Walks at Bogmalo Beach
Bogmalo Beach, nestled cozily in South Goa, is like that underrated book you find in a corner of a library – a peaceful retreat from the usual Goan hustle. Here, the waves don’t just kiss the shore; they narrate tales of the vast Arabian Sea. This beach is perfect for those who prefer their walks sandy and their horizons wide.
What to do at Bogmalo? Well, coastal walks are the main event. It’s like a runway show featuring nature’s best work – the sun playing with the clouds, the palm trees swaying like they’re doing a slow dance, and the occasional crab scuttling across the sand, probably late for a meeting. If you’re feeling more aquatic, the beach also offers a safe and serene swimming experience.

There is so much to explore on this beach paradise. A week’s time or more sometimes fall short to enjoy Goa at its full. If you cannot manage such long trips, plan more short trips. Three days itinerary is the best to explore North and South Goa on a short trip.
