Discover Sarajevo's secret waterfall Skakavac Waterfall Don’t get me wrong, Sarajevo is enchanting, but the real beauty of Bosnia & Herzegovina often lies outside of the cities. Less than 12 kilometers away from the busy streets of Sarajevo, you’ll discover a whole new world of densely forested trails leading to the highest waterfall in the country: Skakavac. It’s a great place for people who want to be captivated by natural beauty without going far away from the city. The cheapest way to reach the waterfall is to get on bus number 69 and ride to Nahorevo and from there, hike to the falls. If you don't want to bother planning the logistics or are just looking for some company, you can take this guided tour of the waterfalls. If you decide to go alone, note that there are three different routes leading to the waterfall: one well-marked path and two unmarked mountain routes if you feel adventurous. I suggest you visit on a weekday and early in the morning because the bus ride takes. For exploring Skakavac while still being close to Sarajevo’s attractions, Hotel President is a comfortable choice in the hills above the Old Town. Find Sarajevo’s forgotten observatory Čolina Kapa Initially built as a fort serving as a military stronghold for the Austro-Hungarians, the site was quickly recognized for its potential and converted into an astronomical observatory. For over four decades, the Čolina Kapa Observatory was the only one of its kind in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, but everything changed in the 1990s. After the war, the observatory was left in ruins, and all of its instruments were severely damaged. Today, Čolina Kapa is nothing more than a symbol of better times in Sarajevo, which occasionally still attracts a few curious souls but remains relatively unfrequented. The observatory can be accessed safely via several different hiking trails and a not-so-well-known cable car. Despite its rough history, the whole area has been mine-free and is completely safe to visit. There aren't any landmines anywhere on the site or on the way. Hotel Baškuća Sarajevo makes a convenient base for exploring Čolina Kapa and Sarajevo’s eastern hills while staying close to the Old Town Visit an unknown but important mosque Bakr-Baba Mosque The Bakr-Baba mosque is probably the most overlooked in Sarajevo. Most tourists visit the Ali Pasha, Gazi Husrev Beg, or Ferhadija Mosque without realizing that there is something unique about the Bakr-Baba Mosque. That’s probably the main reason why you’ll hardly find any foreigners visiting this mosque. The interior features the longest stone levha found in any mosque in Europe. If you aren’t familiar with the term, it’s an Islamic calligraphic panel, and the one in this mosque is 45 meters long, with each stone tablet weighing as much as 50 kg. The mosque was initially built in 1544 but was destroyed and rebuilt on three different occasions. Today, the Bakr Baba Mosque is open to visitors, but I would avoid visiting during prayer times because it gets too crowded. If you want to visit, keep in mind that a mosque is a place of worship, and you should dress appropriately if you want to enter. Hotel President is an excellent choice here, putting you right in the Old Town within easy walking distance of the mosque and other historic sights. Get a taste of 19th-century Sarajevo Despic House Despic House is one of the places that you won’t find in most tourist guides, but it’s definitely worth visiting. This well-preserved house from the 19th century allows visitors to get a glimpse into the everyday life of one of Sarajevo’s richest families at the time. Everything in the house is the same way the family left it. It’s one of the rare monuments that survived the war, and it will give you a great idea of what life in Sarajevo during the 19th century looked like, when the city was the crossroads between the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires. If this is not a reason enough to visit, you should also be aware that the first-ever theatre performance in Sarajevo was held in this house. You can experience all of this for only 2 KM (1€). Hotel Old Town is a particularly convenient option, located right in the historic center and close to Despić House and the Latin Bridge. Find an unsuspected hidden gem Bosniak Institute It’s a real surprise that one of the most important cultural institutions in Sarajevo is so unfrequented. The Bosniak Institute is a cultural center dedicated to Bosnian culture that organizes a lot of interesting events and is one of the best places to deepen your knowledge about Bosnian culture and history. The center was actually founded in Zurich in the 1980s but was later moved to Sarajevo in a building that used to be a Hamam (a public bath). Today, the institute has an impressive art gallery and a library consisting of over 150000 Bosnian books. The Bosniak Institute sure is a great place to learn about the local culture, but it’s also a rare opportunity to see what a Hamam looked like, as Sarajevo doesn’t have any hamams that are still functional. City Hotel - Sarajevo is a good central option, making it easy to explore the Bosniak Institute and Sarajevo’s main sights on foot. Visit a lonely forgotten Ottoman bridge Goat Bridge (Kozja Cuprija) The Kozija Cuprija (Goat Bridge) is a charming Ottoman bridge that also happens to be one of the oldest hidden gems in Sarajevo. Located in the eastern part of the city and surrounded by greenery, it’s a great place for people who are looking for some peace away from the city hustle and bustle. In the past, the bridge served as an entry point to the city and a place where Ottoman officials welcomed people visiting Sarajevo, and also a starting point for pilgrims from the region before leaving for Hajj. Nowadays, the bridge appears to be a very lonely place despite being only 3 kilometers away from the city center. Hotel Aziza is a good choice for this side of the city, with a hillside location that puts you closer to Sarajevo’s eastern walking trails. Visit a bridge with a tragic history Suada and Olga Bridge Just next to the Sniper Alley, you’ll find the Suada and Olga Bridge. It was on this very same bridge that the Siege of Sarajevo took its first victims, Suada and Olga. A year later, a young Christian-Muslim couple was shot too. This tragedy inspired a documentary titled Romeo and Juliet of Sarajevo. That’s why a lot of locals refer to this bridge as the Romeo and Juliet bridge. It’s a monument to some gruesome times that happened not too long ago, and it has become a symbol of the destruction of the 1990s’ war. Many tourists pass by this bridge without knowing its significance. Now that you've learned a few things about it, I’m sure you’ll perceive it differently. Courtyard by Marriott Sarajevo is a comfortable modern base near the river and makes a convenient starting point for exploring this part of Sarajevo. See a human fish at Bijambare Caves Bijambare National Park If you’re in Sarajevo and want to see some of the famous Bosnian natural beauty, there’s no better way to do this than taking a one-day trip to the Bijambare Caves. The caves are a part of the Bijambare National Park, located around 40 kilometers away from Sarajevo, and are surrounded by thick temperate coniferous forest. The whole complex consists of more caves, but only three are open to visitors (because of the ongoing archaeological research taking place in the other caves). Excavations in the caves open to visitors have discovered skeletons from animals dating back to the Ice Age and human remains from the Paleolithic era. The caves are also one of the few places on Earth where you can see the very rare Proteus Anguinus (Human fish). If you want to get here, the best and most economical option is to take the intercity bus Sarajevo-Tuzla- just mention to the driver that you need to get down near the Bijambare National Park. Hotel President is a good Sarajevo base if you plan to make Bijambare a day trip while also wanting to stay in the heart of the city. Find Sarajevo’s most underrated Museum Brusa Bezistan It’s really surprising how so many travelers don’t notice this place while roaming around old town Sarajevo. Perhaps one of the reasons is that the museum has four entrances, but only one of them is open, so I suppose a lot of people pass by it, thinking it might be closed. Brusa Bezistan is a two-story museum and one of the smallest ones in Sarajevo, but it has hundreds of artifacts that show how local people used to live in the past. There are a lot of things to see, ranging from the Stone Age to the Siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s, but the most interesting artifact, in my opinion, is the only 19th-century exact replica of the city of Sarajevo. Hotel Old Sarajevo is an ideal choice for exploring Brusa Bezistan, as it puts you directly in the atmospheric Baščaršija area. Get a taste of life in Yugoslavia Balkan Express Bar You might think that most places in Sarajevo will be alcohol-free, but you couldn’t be more wrong. There are a lot of bars and clubs that serve alcohol, but there aren’t any like the Balkan Express. This bar will give you the unique opportunity to travel back to the Yugoslavian era and see what the average bar looked like back then. The bar is furnished and decorated exclusively with items from the 1970s. You’ll see some old-fashioned wooden chairs and pieces of furniture, a laid-back atmosphere, Yugoslavian music, and, of course, this place couldn’t be complete without a picture of Yugoslavian leader Josip Broz Tito. If you just want to see what the place looks like and have a cup of coffee, visit during the day (the bar will be relatively empty). However, if you want to experience the atmosphere in the Balkan Express, visit in the evening when a lot of locals come here to have drinks, enjoy this unique atmosphere, and remember the good, old Yugoslavian days. Located only 9 kilometers away from Sarajevo, Barice is one of the last places of unspoiled natural beauty that’s a favorite to many locals, but it’s yet to be discovered by the tourist hordes. Barice is reachable via public transportation with bus number 89. You will have to get off at Mrkovići and take a short walk to the hill. The trek is not difficult; you don’t need to be in very good shape, and you don’t need any hiking equipment. Once you get to the top, you’ll discover some of the most spectacular views of Sarajevo. There are several trails that lead to the top of the hill, which are ideal for trekking and biking. If you’re looking for some peace, visit on a weak day. The place gets a bit crowded during the weekends because it’s one of the favorite picnic spots for a lot of locals. Hotel Aziza is a particularly good base for reaching Barice and the surrounding hills while remaining close to the Old Town. Visit forgotten rare medieval tombstones Stećci at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina The so-called Stećci in the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina are one of the rare, well-preserved monuments in Sarajevo that predate the Ottoman era. These medieval tombstones are one of the biggest mysteries of Bosnian history, and little is known about their origin, the people who were buried in them, and the reasons why these particular tombstones were used. Initially, historians thought these tombs were typical for Bosnian Orthodox believers. However, that theory was rejected when similar tombstones appeared across Croatia, Serbia, and even Montenegro. Today, you can find around 50,000 Stećci in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but most of them are in very bad condition. This makes the Stećci of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina even more valuable and even more fascinating. Some of the tombstones are written in the first Slavic (Glagolitic) script and are some of the oldest monuments where you can see a rare sample of this ancient script. The café is surrounded by greenery and fits seamlessly into the forest. The owners are trying to present Kamarija as an outdoor café, but the interior is quite interesting as well. At the moment, there are two levels of seating, and the café serves some delicious Bosnian coffee and homemade cakes. You can reach the café by taking a short 15-minute walk from Baščaršija or by taking a bus (number 51, 52, or 55) to the Vratnik B station.
