Old Dubai consists of two neighborhoods- Deira and Bur Dubai, and is the heart and soul of the city in terms of culture. This section runs along both sides of the Dubai Creek and is a vibrant area filled with local color, history, and charm. At this point, traditional souks (Gold, Spice, Perfume) are still replete with life, and abra boats are still used to cross the water for less than a dollar. The Al Fahidi Historical District is like a museum displaying Dubai’s Bedouin architecture, having wind towers completely rebuilt, art galleries, and museums that are hidden in its narrow streets.
Deira is more commercial and livelier, with older streets, eclectic markets, and different South Asian restaurants. The place is also very well-connected—the two metro lines pass through it, so it is very convenient to travel to Downtown, the airport, or the beach. If you want to immerse yourself in old-world Dubai with the prices that beat the skyscraper zones, this is a great place to choose for your base.
Silver Sand Hotel (Deira)
Silver Sand is a hygienic, simple, and relatively new hotel with rooms being roughly $45–55 per night. It is situated within a short walking distance from Union Metro Station and hence close to Al Ghurair Centre, Deira Clocktower, and the vibrant Naif Market. Although more expensive than most hotels on this list, but still within the range of affordable for the area, Five Luxe carries luxury boutique vibes at an unbeatable price (~$110–130/night). They have spa facilities, beach access, and a rooftop pool for guests. It’s located close to Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai, perfect for couples or honeymooners who want luxury without the five-star price tag.
Al Fahidi / Al Bastakiya
This area is the heart of Dubai’s history. Al Fahidi, also known as Al Bastakiya, is a car-free, pedestrian-only area that is full of art galleries, museums, and cafes, as well as restored wind-tower homes.
